CONSULTATION

I have been a supervisor and consultant for ten years and most of my experience has been in the Bay Area at a variety of clinics—Access Institute, the Psychotherapy Institute and the Masonic Center for Family Services. My style is facilitative rather than didactic. I don’t believe that telling clinicians what to do is very helpful but I do believe in finding creative ways to help the clinician access aspects of experiences with a patient that may have not been previously considered. As I see it, my goal is to help the clinician find new ways of thinking about what's happening rather than to apply any particular theoretical model to case material.  Theory is only valuable if it can clarify something or present experiences in a new light. Too often, however, theory is used as a substitute for thinking rather than something that helps facilitate thinking.
